Conservative Reformer Pledges Less Government, More Freedom, and a Stronger America
Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District — Dave Hughes, a retired U.S. Air Force Major today announced his candidacy for Congress in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District.
Hughes enters the race with a clear message: Washington has grown too big, too intrusive, and too disconnected from the people it is supposed to serve. He is running to restore constitutional limits, protect individual liberty, strengthen national security, and return power to families, communities, and states.
“For too long, government has expanded far beyond its proper role, burdening hardworking Minnesotans with higher taxes, crushing regulations, and policies that make everyday life too expensive,” Hughes said. “I’m running to reverse course, stop government growth and fight for a government that secures our freedom, protects our nation, and then gets out of the way.”
A 21-year Active-Duty Retired Air Force officer, Hughes brings real-world leadership and national security experience at a time when America faces serious threats abroad—particularly from Communist China. He warns that decades of weak leadership and economic dependence have emboldened adversaries and endangered U.S. sovereignty.
“China is not a partner—it is our primary strategic adversary,” Hughes said. “Beijing is buying influence, stealing intellectual property, undermining our military readiness, and hollowing out American manufacturing. We cannot keep funding our own decline by sending jobs, technology, and supply chains overseas.”
Hughes also emphasizes that reckless federal spending and overregulation are directly responsible for the affordability crisis facing families across western Minnesota.
“Groceries, fuel, housing, health care—everything costs more, and Washington keeps pretending it’s not their fault,” Hughes said. “When government prints trillions of dollars, overregulates energy, and taxes productivity, families pay the price. Minnesotans deserve representatives who understand that affordability starts with fiscal discipline and economic freedom.”
Hughes is a strong advocate for:
- Strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution
- Lower taxes and less spending
- A balanced budget and serious action to reduce federal debt
- Free markets and private enterprise—not government mandates
- Energy independence to lower costs and strengthen national security
- Standing up to foreign adversaries, especially China
- Individual Liberty
- A strong national defense without endless foreign entanglements
- Ending Abortion in America
- Repealing all current federal gun laws
“As conservatives, we should never apologize for believing that free people, not centralized bureaucracies, create prosperity,” Hughes said. “Western Minnesota doesn’t need more federal programs—it needs the freedom to work, farm, build businesses, raise families, and pass opportunity on to the next generation.”
Hughes was the Republican Nominee for MN-7 in 2016 and 2018, garnering President Donald Trump’s endorsement in 2018. He says this campaign is about restoring principled representation rooted in independence, accountability, and common sense.
“This district was built by people who value hard work, personal responsibility, and limited government,” Hughes added. “Those values deserve a bold voice in Congress—one that will say no to runaway spending, no to foreign dependence, and no to politics as usual.”
Dave Hughes lives in western Minnesota with his family and remains active in veteran and community causes. His campaign will focus on grassroots engagement across the district and a return to first principles.
Hughes is seeking the 2026 Republican Party Endorsement, and pledges to abide the delegates’ choice. Hughes calls on US Rep Michelle Fischbach to likewise abide the Endorsement, which she reneged on in 2024.
